The belonging in organizations as a performance factor

Being empathetic promotes tolerance of error, the forgiveness of certain personality traits and the solution of certain problems. It is one of the most important characteristics inside and outside an organization.

The importance of feeling included in a certain group is something we all know. In the professional or family context, there is an innate feeling in human beings of not wanting to feel excluded, of being part of something. Currently, and with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, stories related to discrimination, racism and exclusion are multiplying, and many of them come from individuals who not only don’t share a sense of belonging to their organization, but also feel empowered to judge everything and everyone around them. This lack of inclusion is detrimental to the collective, as workers who don’t feel accepted end up boycotting their work, directly or indirectly. Therefore, in order to achieve success, it is essential for everyone in the organization to focus on the whole, rather than on their individual agendas.

But the question that remains is how do we get employees to remain active and feel that they are part of the organization?
Without doubt, there is no right answer to this question, much less a magic formula for satisfying this need. However, there are small aspects which, when improved, can change the way employees perceive their sense of belonging to the brand. One of the first is based on leadership. The choice of a leader for a position must be made thoroughly and should always be accompanied by in-depth reflection on the characteristics and knowledge that the individual can add to the organization. Particularly in teams that already collaborate and are therefore able to identify their strengths and weaknesses, the choice should be even more thought out and analyzed, since employees need someone to help them, but above all to inspire them, to be a role model, an example of someone to follow.

Impatience with other employees is another premise to take into account. This characteristic must be present not only in the leader, but also in all the employees who are part of the organization. Empathy promotes tolerance of error, the excuse of certain personality traits and the solution of certain problems quickly and effectively. It is one of the most important human characteristics inside and outside an organization.

Another aspect to highlight is the sharing of feedback because this makes it possible to measure performance, progress and the employee’s own appreciation. You can’t manage expectations without feedback.

Finally, and even though we don’t always give this topic its due, the relationship between employees has a very significant impact, not only on employee performance, but also on the mutual help and support that each one provides. It is extremely important for organizations to understand that employees are first and foremost people and that they therefore need to be nurtured with a variety of topics that go far beyond the professional context. It’s important to remember that we all have bad days, that there are certain moments when everything seems to go less well and that, from time to time, life plays tricks on us.

The important thing is to remind organizations that the quest for profit is intrinsically linked to the motivation and morale of their employees, because if they feel valued and proud of the organization they represent, they will be the first to raise the organization in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. As a piece of content, I came across a few days ago put it – “it’s motivation, not numbers, that represents the health of a company. The results, as the name implies, are just the consequence”.
